Army technical officers are examining a suspicious object discovered near a shop in Co Londonderry.
Homes and businesses were evacuated after a passer-by found the item in a car park on Kirk Avenue, Magherafelt.
The surrounding area has also been closed off for the security operation.
Meanwhile, train chiefs were forced to close the rail line at Newry, Co Down, on Friday following reports of a suspect device on the line.
The dissident republican security alert came as the Real IRA claimed responsibility for causing four alerts in Londonderry, causing widespread disruption throughout the city.
