A GOREY woman has secured one of the top marks in the country in the Diploma for Accounting Technicians this year.

Michelle Duffin, (39), who works as a clerical officer with Wexford County Council, completed the Accountant Technicians Ireland course in Gorey part-time over two evenings a week. The diploma is recognised as the fastest pathway to a professional accounting career.

Michelle, who is expecting her first baby on Christmas Eve, always had an interest in the area. 'I thought it would be a stepping stone to chartered accountancy,' she said. 'I've been working in the planning department for the last eight years and I've asked for a transfer to the finance section.'

'The course was far more intensive than I realised, which I loved,' she added. 'I liked the idea that I could continue working full-time and see how I got on in accountancy. The course was an ideal foundation to see if I was suited to the field.'
