Late family man Richie was a great teller of tall tales

THE sad death took place recently of Richie Byrne, from 26 Abbey Street.

Richie passed away peacefully at his home following a short illness. He was 69 years old.

The son of William and Peggy Byrne, Richie was born in Michael Street before moving to Bishopswater.

He was educated at the CBS Secondary School before taking up employment with Fine Wool, in Drinagh.

He subsequently worked for Nineo and Schoepp Velours.

Richie was renowned as a teller of tall tales.

'He was a great man for the stories and you never knew whether to believe what he told you or not. He could convince you black was white,' said his wife Mary, whom he married in September, 1973.

He loved socialising - McGees was his much-loved local, - films and socialising. Richie had strong family values and cherished all his family, particularly his grandchildren.

Richie is sadly missed by Mary, sons and daughters Ian, Alan, Sharon and Lisa, sons-in-law Decky and Robbie, brothers Ronnie, Fergie and David, sisters Miriam and Celine, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren Ellen, Katie, Kayla, Callum and the late Cairan, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.

His Requiem Mass took place at Rowe Street Church, followed by burial at Crosstown Cemetery.
