Tributes have been paid to the late Pat Murphy, Coolcotts, who died on May 27.

Pat was born in Cloondroon, Milltown, Co. Galway, on June 1, 1929 and while he spent most of his life in Wexford, he had a great love of the West and kept in good contact with his family there.

Pat was known fondly as Pádraig in Galway. He was one of seven children and in his early years he worked on the family farm before joining An Garda Síochána in 1954.

He was stationed in Bandon, Skibereen, Monaghan and Clontibret, before being stationed in Killanne as a garda sergeant in 1965. A few years later, Pat was transferred to Wexford Town and he married Marie, originally from Co. Mayo, on July 21, 1970. Pat served in several capacities in Wexford, including Immigration at Rosslare Harbour and Crime Prevention, in County Wexford, and retired from the Gardaí in 1986.

During his retirement, Pat was involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Ozanam House, Wexford where he was the treasurer for a number of years. Pat was also involved in the retired Garda association, the GSRMA. One of Pat's interests was his garden and he enjoyed many happy hours planning and carrying out work in his garden.

Pat always had a great sense of community and was active as a Eucharistic Minister in Clonard Church until he became ill. He had great faith and loved his family.

A great communicator, Pat was a man whose opinion was very much valued and appreciated. He always took a great interest in the people that he met along the way and tried to help them in any way that he could. Pat never lost the gift of communication, even when he was ill.

Pat will be greatly missed by his wife Marie, his sons Michael and Pádraig, his daughter Ann-Marie, his one surviving sister Rosaleen, son-in-law Johnny, his grandchildren Cathal, Róisín and Donogh, relatives, neighbours and many friends. Pat's family would like to thank everybody for their help and support over this sad time.

Pat's Month's Mind will be held on Sunday, July 12, at 11.30 a.m. in the Church of the Annunciation, Clonard.
