Maverick gears up for first Wexford gig in four years

■ New Ross rapper Michael Stafford, aka Maverick Sabre.
New Ross rapper Michael Stafford, better known these days as Maverick Sabre, is all set to make a triumphant return to County Wexford. The London-based entertainer from Barrowside, is poised to take Enniscorthy by storm as the headline act on the opening night of this year's Strawberry Fest.
A former pupil at Good Counsel school, Stafford is hugely popular in Ireland and his album ' Lonely are the Brave' album is in big demand. His plans to play in the Showgrounds were made public during an interview on Beat FM where he confirmed that he is looking forward to coming home in June.
'The last gig I played that close to home I was about 17, I can't wait to play the festival,' commented the musician, who is now 21 years of age.
The second staging of the newlook Strawberry Fest is set to take place over the weekend June 1-3. The 2011 version of the event featured UB40 veteran Ali Campbell. The early signs are that, this time around, the organisers are clearly aiming to attract young music fans.
The line up arranged by Enniscorthy impresario Rob Murphy for the summer includes not only Maverick Sabre but also London hiphop artist Mikill Pane and Dublin's Original Rudeboys.
'Lots more exciting announcements are on the way over the coming months,' said a festival spokeswoman, urging everyone to please check the festival website www.strawberryfest.ie. Day tickets are €20.
Tickets may also be purchased from HOPE cancer support shop; Whites For Music and Metro 17.
