FOUNDED in 1954, Camross Drama Group flourished out of the Caroreigh Dramatic Class, and over the past five and a half decades has served its own community with distinction. Annual productions are the hallmark of Camross Drama Group, but the confidence and skills they impart to their members spreads deeper into many different aspects of the community.
The group has brought national titles back to Camross throughout their existence. Their first two national titles were picked up in the 1950s and they have continued in a similar vein since then.
However, the silverware is only a small part of the success story of Camross Drama Group. The benefits that accrue from this group are many and widespread.
Players develop confidence through learning their on-stage craft, while many other skills are put to the test back stage and in the technical departments.
However, the life-long friendships made around the footlights are probably one of the most important aspects of this theatrical troupe.
The group are a heartbeat in the local community, and their efforts are not only thoroughly enjoyed by local audiences but instill a sense of pride.
Many of the plays they produce also portray Irish culture, heritage and rural living. Coming from a rural setting these productions are often a case of art reflecting local life.
Camross Drama Group have given hours of pleasure to the community - from the people performing on stage, to the backstage crews, lighting designers, and directors.
Each production requires community support, from audiences to ticket sellers, doormen, and even the ladies who make the cup of tea during the intervals.
This combined effort engenders a real sense of camraderie and genuine, friendships which last, long after the scripts are put down, and the footlights dimmed.
