The UK's third biggest selling single of all time, Bohemian Rhapsody may never have made it to number one 40 years ago but for the persistence of the late Kenny Everett, DJ at Capital Radio in London. In the era of the three-minute single, Queen's five minute-plus opus was considered far too long for radio by record company EMI, who refused to release it as a single. The band gave Everett a reel-to-reel copy and he played it 14 times over one weekend. On Monday record stores were overrun with fans trying to buy the single. EMI saw the light and Bohemian Rhapsody became 1975's Christmas number one, remaining at the top for nine weeks.
