'Freedom' marked a return to the top of the charts for Wham! duo George Michael (Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou) and Andrew Ridgeley, two mates from Watford who had first met up at school. Earlier in 1984 they had hit No. 1 in the UK for the first time with worldwide smash 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'. It was followed by the 1.3 million-selling 'Careless Whisper', curiously credited as a George Michael solo release despite being co-written by Ridgeley and appearing on the Wham! album 'Make It Big'. Michael did go solo from 1987 and 'Freedom', which topped charts in the UK, Ireland and Norway, and reached number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, would resurface for a brief moment in the early months of that solo career, its melody clearly to be heard in the introduction to hit single 'Faith'.
