Any other year, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley would surely have claimed the Christmas number one with 'Last Christmas'. But they had to settle for the runners-up spot in 1984 as the biggest selling Christmas single of all time (and the biggest selling single in the UK until Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind 1997') swept all before it, residing at No. 1 for five weeks and selling 3 million by the last day of 1984. Written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for - and awareness of - famine victims in Ethiopia, the song was recorded by an all-star cast,, including Bono, Sting, Boy George, Duran Duran, Paul Weller and Phil Collins. Subsequent versions of Do They Know It's Christmas?, in 1989, 2004 and 2014 also reached number one in both the UK and Ireland.
