When The Joker hit the top of the UK and Irish charts in September, 1990, it entered the record books...and it remains the hit with the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers. The song, from Steve Miller Band's 1973 album of the same name, reached the top of the Billboard charts in the US in early 1974 but did not chart this side of the Atlantic at that time. Sixteen years later, the track was used in a Levi's TV ad and on re-release finally made number one in the UK, as well as Ireland, Netherlands and New Zealand. It's famous for its wolf whistle (played on slide guitar) and the strange lyric 'Some people call me Maurice/ 'cause I speak the pompatus of love'.
