The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) was originally recorded by American singer Merry Clayton in 1963, having been rejected by hit girl group The Shirelles. A year later, soul singer Betty Everett scored a hit with the song, reaching number six in the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. It first become a hit this side of the Atlantic via Linda Lewis whose disco version reached No. 6 in the UK (and 9 in Ireland), but - almost three decades after it was written by Rudy Clark (who also wrote George Harrison's 'Got My Mind Set On You') - The Shoop Shoop Song finally made No.1 in the UK and Ireland, and other countries around the world, as a single for Cher (above) from the soundtrack to the film 'Mermaids'. It was Cher's first solo number one in the UK.
