It's now over 20 years since the Spice Girls phenomenon first gripped the pop world. Their debut single 'Wannabe' (famously recorded in less than an hour) had a lukewarm reception from the critics, but the song which now defines an era of girl power won best single at the Brits, and an Ivor Novello Award for best British-written single, and topped the charts in no fewer than 37 countries. The Spice Girls' only number one in the US, where it has sold around three million copies to date, it is one of the best selling singles worldwide, with over seven million sold. The song's success was helped in no small way by an iconic video which featured Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Posh singing and dancing while running through a set. It was filmed in just one shot after the five had rehearsed their moves through the night.
