ladies GAA

Clonard Volunteers has had a week of nail biting semi-finals and finals. First up our under-12 Green Team played Castletown at home on Tuesday evening.

This was a very close fought contest however, Castletown were just that bit stronger than our young team, 10 of which are under-10, It was a tough game, really was neck and neck till the third quarter when Castletown got their head's in front and we just couldn't catch them. Final score was 2-4 v 2-9, as Coach Collette said there was very little between the teams in the end, we received lovely words from a parent after the game for the team saying 'it was so competitive, well matched sides, how the girls she said fought till the end and it was a pleasure to watch them tonight and during the whole season'

We have an excellent and still such a young second team, The girls have Unbelievable skill, speed, agility, most importantly they all have lovely attitudes on and off the pitch.

Wednesday evening our under-12 Pink team braved the elements to play their Cup semi-final V Bunclody at home in Clonard, it was only in the final quarter just like our game away to Bunclody in the league that the girls pulled up them socks and drove home. A goal of absolute brilliance from Katie Law (Messi or Ronaldo would be proud of it) put us 1pt up with seven minutes to go, Collette and Ray Cullinane's hearts were in their mouths at this stage as this was followed by a super point by Emer O'and then we hung on for our dear lives to secure their well deserved place in the under-12 Division 2 county final on September 3 in Wexford park.

On Saturday morning Brendan Rochfords under-14 Green Team played their shield final away to Shamrocks, again another nail biting game with back to back action till the final whistle, great scores were taken from Emer O'Connor, who just took off and scored a massive 2-3 from play, Alibhe Cullinane 1-0, Alibhe White1-1, Susie O'Gorman 0-2, Issult McKiernan Beckett 0-1, however, close the game was Shamrocks scored a goal in the last minute to win by 0-2. Overall definitely an outstanding team performance from this young team. Brendan was happy with the teams performance as they gave 100% to the end.

A big hard luck to our brave under-14 pink team who just came up short against a very good Baile Dubh Tíre side in their county final today. This team showed unbelievable team spirit and determination to fight back from a slow start to draw level with just 10 minutes to go. We played some fantastic football and got some great scores and BDT didn't know what had hit them. Unfortunately they got two late goals against the run of play, one very dodgy, to hang on for a very narrow win. Considering we suffered a heavy defeat to the same opposition earlier in the summer shows how much the girls improved and developed over the summer. This team should all be very proud of themselves, the club is certainly very proud of you. We learned a huge amount from today and with the fantastic team spirit and never say die attitude the girls showed great potential for the future.

A million thanks to all the underage parents (especially Leah and Mary) for your fantastic support and encouragement throughout the year and also to our under-14 sponsor Gemma Hayes Recruitment Without your support, we wouldn't be able to witness such great games as we had this past week. Well done one and all, next up our under-16 girls play in their cup semi-final V St Martin's on August 29.

Best of luck to our under-16 player Niamh Tormey, who has been selected to attend trials with the under-17 Irish International Squad on Wednesday, Well done to former volunteer member Katie Fitzhenry, who done a fantastic job representing her county/country with the Irish Women's Rugby team as they played in the world cup last week.

Our under-12 Blue ladies' football team were unlucky in their semi-final play off against Davidstown-Courtnacuddy though the girls kept battling till the final whistle. Well done girls we are so proud of you all.

It wasn't to be their day on Saturday but what a season it has been for the under-14 ladies' football team. It's no mean feat to finish as the second best under-14 team in the county after an excellent campaign. These girls have wowed us all season with their work ethic, friendships, zest for fun and their amazing results in the top division in football.

Thanks to everyone who stood behind the team this year. To Michael, Barry, Philip and Conor the dedicated coaches who gave the girls such great encouragement as well as great training. To Allison, who was always there as the second Mammy whenever needed and to everyone who contributed in any way to the success of this team.

Hard luck to the junior team who lost out to Crossabeg-Ballymurn on Saturday afternoon in their shield final.
