Maritime Matters

The Tuskar Rock lighthouse, built from granite and standing 120 feet tall, was built over a period of years beginning in 1812. In October of that year, a storm struck, washing away temporary barracks which had been erected on the island, and killing fourteen workmen-the worst such disaster in Ireland's history of lighthouse construction. The surviving workers clung to the island's slippery rocks for two full days before being discovered and rescued. Work resumed, and the lighthouse was completed, entering into operation on 4 June 1815.

Environment Group

As the Tidy Towns Adjudicators will be in the area shortly, the Group would encourage everyone to make an effort to keep their area clean and tidy. Now is the time to paint that wall and to tidy up the garden. Please don't forget the bit outside of your property that we just couldn't get to this year. Every little help is appreciated.

ICA guild

The Kilrane/Rosslare Harbour Guild held their monthly meeting on Wed 6th May at the community centre, Kilrane. The president, Carmel Lonnergan, welcomed the commitee and members to the meeting. She then went on to state that the guild was very active with various activities including:

Pilates classes- doing very well; the Cycling club weekly run- getting fitter and fitter; the weekly Cards school- otherwise known as gamblers anon; Drama group- star struck guilders. Some members provided refreshments for the volunteers of the Environmental Group's annual community clean up. The Community Text Alert is slowly taking shape and should be in operation by early autumn, members will be kept up to date on this.

The drama group presented a short comedy sketch which had the members in stitches. They then showed two DVDs of concerts held many years ago, one from 1992. The members thoroughly enjoyed them with some, who took part in the concerts, not recognising themselves! It was tinged with some sadness since a few of the performers have since passed away.

Betty Halligan, Daffodil Day organiser, reported this years collection amounted to €4,257, a big thank you to all who helped her. The last meeting before the summer break will, in fact, be an outing to Clonmore Garden Centre, Clonroche on Wed 3rd June leaving Kilrane at 5.30pm. Non members who would like to come, please contact Carmel Lonnergan
