A cool and blustery evening is what greeted Wexford's elite road runners on Friday week last for the County Senior road championships held in Enniscorthy. It was always going to be a competitive fare with a number of athletes showing good form lately.
Niall Sheil for St. Killian`s club had a great race to finish in third place in a time of 32 minutes 50 seconds. It just shows the calibre of the race that the first three runners ran under 33 minutes with Slaney Olympics Ger Forde taking the win and Myles Gibbons from SBR in second place. Niall felt disappointed having finished behind Gibbons as he had beaten him on many occasions before.
But on Friday last at the Masters championships in Our Ladys Island, his revenge was sweet as he finished 40 metres ahead of the SBR man to take the title. The 2 lap 6k course was testing and after the first lap it was Niall with SBR athletes Paul Lunch and Myles Gibbons pilling on the pace leading the field. With a kilometre to go Niall took the lead to take the win ahead of Myles and Paul.
Club Chairman Padraig Moriarty had a great race and worked really hard after a tough weeks training to come in second place in his category and 24th overall.
Niall also travelled to Enniscorthy on Sunday morning to take part in the Vinegar Hill 5 mile race in aid of St Senan`s national school. He finished the weekend off well to take the win.
