Oulart 1916

There is much of our local history that we know so little about, especially the role of local people in the 1916 Insurrection. We owe it to ourselves and to the young people in our area to remember, with pride, the noble and idealistic men and women who were prepared to make immense sacrifices to attain the freedom that we now enjoy.

Oulart author and historian, Brian Cleary was in Enniscorthy Library last Thursday 10th March to give a lecture on the 1916 de Lacy family from Oulart. Three brothers Michael, Larry and Ned (father of Michael and Lar who reside in the de Lacy homestead near the village) were very prominent in the Nationalist movement at that time.

Michael who was a teacher was one of the leaders in the Athenaeum during the Easter Rising and was imprisoned in the aftermath of the Rising. Larry was a renowned journalist who worked for various publications including "The Echo" while Ned farmed in Oulart.
