Our Lady's Island
Farewell to Jack
It was with great sadness that we bid farewell to one of our Club's brightest talents and truest gents in Jack Pettit last Friday. The news of Jack's sudden passing rocked our small parish and the wider area when it broke on Monday of last week.
Jack was among the most talented, if not the, most talented young man to wear the Blue and white of Our Lady's Island. He represented Wexford at all age levels across both codes from under-13 level right up to adult level where he lined out for the Wexford Intermediate hurlers in 2016. He won numerous county titles with Our lady's Island and St Fintan's, and Forth and Bargy Gales at underage level. He also represented Glynn-Barntown club with distinction as an isolated player. At school level he would have starred with St Peter's College at both senior and junior level where he received the honour of Senior Sports Star for 2016.
The above role of honours are only a part measure of the incredible young man, who despite his considerable talent was humble, honest, hardworking, a ferocious competitor but above all a genuinely respectful and nice young man. The huge crowds of young people from across the Wexford GAA community who attended over the three days and their outpouring of grief is testament to his character.
Jack's family is steeped in the GAA, from his Grandfather Seán's long playing career with the club and great service to the GAA administration at both District and county level, to his father Liam's long playing and coaching career with the club being the current manager of our intermediate hurlers. Also his late grandfather Dick, who represented Wicklow at county level for over 10 years.
To Jack's family, we as a club, offer our deepest sympathies, in particular to Liam, Julie and David. We commend the tremendous strength and character which ye all showed in honouring your beautiful young son and brother in the way you did. Always know that we as a club and community are here for ye to help and support in any way we can as ye come to terms with this unspeakable loss.
Jack it has been our pleasure to share the field with, coach, cheer on, admire and more than anything to have gotten to know you since you joined our club at an early age. We will miss you, but we will never forget you, and your memory will always be in our hearts and minds. Ar deish de go raibh a hanam.
