PEOPLE AFFECTED by compulsive gambling can talk to others in a similar situation at meetings of Gam-anon in the Aiseiri treatment centre in Roxborough.
Gam-anon is an international organisation offering support to the family and friends of compulsive gamblers. The Wexford group meets at 8.30 p.m. every Monday night and welcomes new members.
'Living with someone who is suffering from a gambling addiction can be a difficult and solitary experience,' said a spokesperson.
'Family members find it hard to speak about the problem and feel that no-one else can understand what they are going through.'
'Over time, Gam-anon members find that they start to feel relieved of their anxiety and guilt, and learn to let go of responsiblity for the gambler's problem.'
Gam-anon groups are run alongisde Gambler's Anonymous services but relatives can attend Gam-anon even if the gambler is not yet ready to ask for help.
