'Nationwide' films Cry Before Dawn
LOCAL rock legends Cry Before Dawn are the subject of an RTE 'Nationwide' feature to mark their 30th anniversary.
Filming took place on Wednesday, prior to their headlining appearance on Festival opening night at the Spiegeltent on Wexford Quayfront.
This was Cry Before Dawn's first gig in the Spiegeltent and their first hometown show since two sellouts in Wexford Opera House.
Film locations for the 'Nationwide' shoot included Wexford quays and bass player Vinnie Doyle's mother's house in Coolballow, where his mum Mary was interviewed.
Back in the eighties the band had often rehearsed at the house.
Vinne said the programme would be broadcast in January to mark the band's 30th anniversary, although they would actually be 31 years old by then.
Cry Before Dawn are Brendan Wade (vocals/guitar/whistles), Vinnie Doyle (bass), Pat Hayes (drums) and Steve Belton (lead guitar). Keyboard player Dara Munis from Dublin also plays live with the band.
Wexford native Brendan now lives in Switzerland. Steve Belton, who resides in Wicklow and was a member of eighties band The Fountainhead, replaced original guitarist Tony Hall when the band made their comeback in 2011. In December 2012 the band issued a limited edition double album of their two nights at the Wexford Opera House, called 'Live at the Opera House'.
Vinnie said the band was very happy with the way their performance went down at the Spiegeltent on Wednesday after a two and half year absence in the town. 'People expect us to give a good performance and from what we are hearing anyone who attended the gig was very happy and enjoyed a trip down memory lane,' he said.
Asked what plans the band had now, Vinnie said they were very selective about what suits the members and their schedules.
'We pick nice gigs over the summer, the Spiegeltent Festival now and venues like Vicar Street,' he said.
Vinnie said his mum was delighted to be interviewed by RTE.
'They interviewed the band and then interviewed by mam and she had a longer interview than we did, so I don't know what that says about us!' joked the bass player.
