Parks tennis is on offer at 16 courts

EVERY YEAR when summer comes around, the strawberries start appearing on the road-side and everyone has a look at Wimbledon. This year instead of watching why not have a go, or if you are near one of the 16 Parks Tennis venues in Wexford, why not drop the children along. See www.ParkstennisLeinsterWexford

If there are groups of parents at any of the venues who would like a couple of hours' coaching, in how to play tennis with your child, the coaches in each venue can make arrangements to co-ordinate a short programme.

Wexford Parks Tennis provides 16 venues throughout the county, catering for over 950 children for the month of July. This year two new venues are opening up, one in Scoil Mhuire (Coolcotts), and one in the community courts in Duncannon.

The Parks programme is the cheapest summer camp in Wexford, and leads children through simple instructions and fun games to learn the three basic strokes and the essentials of playing tennis matches. Make new friends and learn a game for life.

It's €30 for the month, or €18 for two weeks (one hour per day from Monday to Friday), making it a great value camp.

This year Parks Tennis is trying two new methods of improving our programme: virtual tennis, and a new fun competition for Under-12 and -14 singles, doubles and mixed, starting in the first week.

The aim here is to provide competition for those who were in the Parks in previous years, and now just want to improve and play matches. In tennis matches it is all about you, improving your own skills and strokes.

In 2013 Parks Tennis also linked up with the Wexford Sports Partnership, the Schools Completion Programme, and both local clubs, Hillbrook and the Tennis and Boat Club, to give free lessons in eight primary schools. Ashley Wynne, the coach in the clubs, and three Parks coaches led lessons for four-six hours in each school. All of the schools have courts or basketball courts which are easy to convert to tennis.

The four weeks of July will fly by, with the final week being competitions for all players. On Thursday, July 25, there are the doubles finals in Hillbrook Tennis Club, Enniscorthy. This is followed by the singles finals on Friday, July 26, in the Tennis and Boat Club, Wexford.
