€1 million state-of-the-art athletics track officially opened
A brand new one million euro all-weather sports facility has been officially opened in Enniscorthy,
The brand new state-of-the-art sports track and field officially named the 'Enniscorthy Sports Hub' offers athletes a 400 metre eight lane all-weather running track, long jump and high jump areas, steeplechase and a centre in-field area all floodlit. The facility also includes extensive changing facilities all completed to the precise standards of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The new facility was officially opened by Councillor Barbara-Anne Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy District of Wexford County Council and John Treacy, Olympian and CEO of the Irish Sports Council on Saturday afternoon last.
Councillor Murphy said: 'This is the first sports facility of this kind and scale to be opened in Wexford. We expect the 'Enniscorthy Sports Hub' to prove hugely popular right across the region attracting large numbers of users from all over the Southeast who will enjoy this recreation amenity.'
John Treacy said: 'It is fantastic to see this sports track and field come to fruition here in Wexford. The county produces a huge number of brilliant athlethes and I believe that the availability of this facility locally will only add to this number. The 'Enniscorthy Sports Hub' brings the facility standard available in Wexford to an international level and it is imperative that across the country such amenities are made available if we are to properly nurture our sports talent and increase our competitiveness in athletics at an international level.'
The offiicial opening saw the track and field filled with sports enthusiasts with senior men's and ladies races, paralympian throws, high jumps and under-age relays all taking place at a track open day. The sporting events were followed by a parade of sports groups who represented clubs from across county Wexford and the official ribbon cutting.
