Action causes passport delays

WEXFORD travel agencies have been inundated this week with calls from worried customers who have booked holidays but still need to renew passports.

Industrial action by staff in the Passport Office in Dublin has led to huge public queues and a massive backlog of applications. 'We have some very frightened people who have paid for holidays and need new passports,' said Anne Furlong of Mackin Travel.

'People are being told to expect a delay of up to 20 working days. That's four weeks. Anyone travelling in the next four weeks who hasn't put an application in, is in trouble. If they have sent it in, they can track it on-line', said Anne. O' Leary Travel in Wexford has also received 'lots of queries' from anxious customers, according to Maura Doran. 'We have people who sent off applications two or three weeks ago and they haven't got their passports back yet'.
