Aiming to 'grow' €1,000
A WEXFORD mum and her children are among six ' pioneer' families chosen to face a grow your own food challenge as part of the Aib-sponsored Operation GIY Nation campaign.
Duncormick native Jennifer Mcdonagh and her two boys David (2) and Mark (6) is competing against five other families from around the country to win €1,000 worth of GIY goodies
Jennifer has no previous experience of growing her own food and is hoping to save some money on her grocery bills while having something fun to do with her two boys.
' We've just received our pack and we're going to start planting today. We're starting with lettuce, parsley, courgettes, garden peas, beetroot and carrots.
'If we manage to get through all of that we won't have to do any shopping at all soon! said Jennifer.
Grow It Yourself (GIY) Ireland is encouraging families all over the country to get their hands dirty and grow their own food.
Each month between April and September, GIY will be publishing a simple growing project for families to undertake on the Operation GIY Nation website, www.giyireland.com/giynation, where visitors can also follow the progress of all the families taking part in the challenge.
