Ambassadors programme put on ice for actress and hotelier
THE Ambassador programme which sees well-known Wexford people champion the county at home and abroad, is being reviewed.
Cllr George Lawlor said it is time that Wexford County Council takes a fresh look at the programme which could involve using people who have settled in the county to promote it.
Cllr Lawlor said: 'There are a lot of people who have moved into Wexford to open industries and businesses. We could look at making them ambassadors.'
Actress Charlie Murphy and hotelier John Fitzpatrick of the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group are in line to take up the positions of Wexford Ambassadors, but confusion reigned at the meeting as to when this would occur.
Cllr Malcolm Byrne called for the programme to be recommenced and fully supported.
He said there was reluctance from would-be participants as a list was drawn up of what they were required to do as ambassadors.
Cllr John Hegarty described the programme as 'hugely successful' in promoting the county. He asked why an official ambassador naming ceremony for Ms Murphy and Mr Fitzpatrick has yet to take place.
'We already haven't celebrated Wexford Day this year.'
Chairperson Cllr Tony Dempsey said the programme has not been discontinued.
Director of Services John Carley said the ambassadors will receive their award and work is ongoing on the programme.
