The organisers of the World Shore Angling Championships, which were held in Wexford last week, were praised at the meeting for the event's outstanding success.

Cllr George Lawlor described the championships as a fantastic achievement. 'The launch was tremendous and I congratulate everyone involved.'

He said the opening ceremony at the National Opera House was a spectacular event. 'There were 29 teams from 18 countries in attendance and 4,000 bed nights were filled as a result of the championships. Anglers from outside Ireland said Wexford is one of the best shore angling locations in the Europe as we have two shorelines, one on the south west and one to the east. There are a number of Wexford people on the Irish team.'

Cllr Lawlor highlighted the tourism potential of developing the county as an angling destination. 'There are one million registered anglers in Italy and there are more people fishing in England every weekend than playing football,' Cllr Lawlor said.

Chairman Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said the launch was a great occasion.

'Well done to everyone involved in it. A lot of work went in to the championships behind the scenes and I'd like to congratulate the staff of Wexford County Council.'
