Athlete's special guest

Conor CULLEN

MENAPIANS Athletics Club had a very fitting guest to hand out the medals to their Mini Olympians at the Presentation Secondary School last Thursday.

Campile man and Menapians member Pat Shannon came along to make the presentations to the youngsters following their annual Mini Olympics.

They were especially delighted that Pat came along in his full gear from the Winter Olympics, where he represented Ireland in the skeleton.

Pat told the children all about the skeleton, where the competitor pushes his sled away from the start before he lies down on the sled facing forwards and uses his bodyweight to steer. Competitors can reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.

All the kids got a go on the sled, where Pat showed them the correct technique, and they also tried on his distinctive helmet, featuring a green skull.

'He's was very good and patient with all the kids,' said Jimmy O'Neill.
