A WEXFORD MOTHER was airlifted to Dublin to give birth to her fourth child last week, as snowy weather made the journey impossible by ambulance.
Sandra Carey, from Cromwellsfort, needed specialist maternity care in Holles Street for the delivery of her baby son on Thursday but ice covered roads meant she couldn't be conveyed by ambulance.
Instead, an air ambulance was dispatched from Dublin and Sandra was airlifted to an army barracks in Ranelagh on Wednesday morning, before being transferred to Holles Street where she gave birth on Thursday afternoon.
Baby Carey had to be born in the capital, as it was discovered during Sandra's pregnancy that the infant would require urgent medical treatment on his arrival.
On Friday the infant was transferred to Crumlin Children's Hospital where he underwent a successful bowel operation.
Baby Carey is the youngest child of Sandra and Mark Carey, who also are parents to Ryan (15), Ciara (15) and 11 month old Toni.
This week, proud dad Mark was brimful of praise for the Irish medical services. 'I certainly have no complaints. They got Sandra to Dublin despite the snow,' he said. He also praised the maternity units in Wexford General Hospital and the foetal assessment units in Holles Street. ' They are the most caring, genuine, decent people you'll ever meet. I'll never whinge about the health care system we have,' he said. He added that his wife was ' petrified' going to Dublin in the air ambulance.
'It was okay though, they sent a midwife with her and she was there in half an hour,' he smiled.
