Banned after letting 15-year-old drive
AN AGRICULTURAL contractor who let a 15year-old boy drive one of his tractors without insurance has been fined €2,000 and put off the road for one year.
John Crean Murphy (44), of Kilcorral, Castlebridge, was charged with being the owner of a vehicle driven without insurance at Littlebridge, Killinick, on June 19, 2010.
Sergeant Mick Clarke told Judge Donnchadh O Buachalla that a 15-yearold was stopped driving the John Deere tractor when it clipped the back of Sadie Meyler's jeep.
Sgt Clarke said that the collision didn't cause too much damage to the car, but when he responded to the report of the accident he found that the tractor was being driven by a 15-year-old boy.
He spoke to Crean Murphy, who acknowledged that the youngster was driving his tractor on the road, but Sgt Clarke said that the defendant told the insurance company a different story, informing them that another person, an employee of his, was driving the tractor.
However, Sgt Clarke said he became aware of this lie and informed the insurance company of the actual facts of the accident. The insurance company later paid for the damage caused to Ms Meyler's jeep.
Crean Murphy, an agricultural contractor with no previous convictions, did not appear in court last week to meet the charge.
Judge O Buachalla fined him €2,000 and disqualified him from driving for one year.
