'Basic' supplies fly off shelves in supermarkets

IT WAS like Christmas Eve all over again in Wexford supermarkets last weekend as shoppers stocked up on groceries in anticipation of a big snowfall on Sunday night.
There were queues in Pettitt's SuperValu in St. Aidan's shopping centre where staff handed out free teas and coffees to waiting customers.
'People are buying fire-lighters, soups, porridge, stewing beef, spuds - honest to goodness traditional fare. It's back to basics', said marketing manager Siobhán O' Keeffe.
The off-licence didn't seem to be doing any extra business. 'People probably had drink left over from Christmas', said Siobhán.
Pettitt's SuperValu didn't have problems getting supplies of staples like bread and milk as local producers ensured they were kept stocked up.
'They've been doing their best to get to us, no matter what', Siobhán added.
At Tesco supermarket in Distillery Road, queues at the long line of checkouts were up to 10 deep.
Manager Andrew Colley said he felt it was a mixture of people replenishing stocks of groceries after being confined to home for a few days and customers acting on the forecast for worsening weather conditions.
'They're buying meat to make stews, potatoes, soups and lots of hot stuff. The bread shelves are almost empty at the moment'.
