When Murrintown native Martina Lambert was diagnosed with breast cancer in August, there was one person who went that extra mile to show her support.

Aware of the fact that treatment was going to lead to hair loss, Martina decided to turn it into a positive thing by organising her own sponsored head shave for Breast Cancer Ireland. However, when she made her plan public, she never expected old friend Rosemary Delaney to get the chop alongside her.

'For her to offer to do that was fantastic. She is the best friend that anyone could ask for,' said Martina, who has known Rosemary since she was 17. 'It was lovely. We did the shave in her house and there were only six of us there. It was a nice, quiet family occasion.'

The small event made a big difference as the pair raised €4000 for Breast Cancer Ireland. Together with family members and friends, the pair presented the money to the charity at a special ceremony in Hotel Rosslare last week. According to Martina, they were delighted with the amount that they raised.

'People have been so amazing and generous,' she said. 'There's nobody that hasn't been affected by cancer in one way or another.'
