AN All-Ireland football title has come Wexford's way, thanks to the members of the Bree Macra Na Feirme organisation.

The Bree boys were triumphant at the recent National Dairy Council/Macra 7-aside competition at the Clan na Gael GAA club grounds at Johnstown in County Roscommon, where they beat Ballycoog from Wicklow by 5-13 to 2-3 in the final.

Bree had actually been beaten by Ballycoog earlier in the day during the roundrobin stages of the competition, by 1-5 to 0-5, but according to team captain Niall Doyle the defeat actually did his side well: 'we knew what was coming in the final and how to play them then!' he remarked.

Bree beat Askamore by 3-10 to 3-5 in the County Wexford final to qualify for the national stage, and made it through to the final as their defeat to Ballycoog was their only loss in the group, since they managed to beat two sides from Cork and another either intermediate or junior level for Ballyhogue during the Wexford championship season just finished.

Niall Doyle, who is also Chairman of Bree Macra, said they were delighted to have taken the title. 'Our club has really reinvented itself over the past three years and we're delighted that it has led to national success, and particularly sporting success,' he said.

That re-invention has also led to Bree being in the running for another national title: that of AIB Macra Na Feirme Club of the Year.

Bree is one of 14 clubs from across the country nominated for the award, with the winners due to be announced at the organisation's annual conference in Waterford at the end of the month.

Niall Doyle says that new members are always welcome in Bree, and particularly now that the Macra season is getting going in earnest. Anyone who would like to get involved can ring him at (087) 6165655 or the club secretary Sinéad Hughes at (086) 3220806 from the host county of Roscommon. While the 7-a-side game was relatively new to them, they had actually been in training for most of the year, as all members of the squad lined out at
