Bridgetown native Rory Cassidy has his sights set on a future as a sports reporter and though he is only 15, it seems he is already on the ball.

The third year student from Bridgetown College recently scooped the Con Houlihan Young Sports Journalist Award at this year's Listowel Writers Week.

Despite being up against writers up to five years his senior, Rory pipped them to the post with his article on how travelling to events affects athlete performance.

'I didn't expect to do so well in the contest,' said Rory. 'I was very happy and surprised to hear that I had won.'

As a result of his win, Rory picked up €100 for himself and had his story printed in The Kerryman newspaper.

Rory's interest in sports and sports journalism is what inspired him to enter the competition this year.

Though he doesn't currently write for any blogs or publications, he is hoping to carve a name for himself in the world of sport's reporting in future.
