Members of the Wexford town community have pulled together to organise a Junior Cert Results celebration this Wednesday September 14 in an effort to tackle underage drinking around the town.
The celebrations in St Joseph's Community Centre will be open to students from all schools around the county. DJs from Beat will provide the music on the night.
The event has been organised by a group of local residents who wanted to provide students with a safe space to celebrate their results night.
'Parents tend to be concerned about their kids going on the town and drinking. There has been some hassle in previous years,' said local resident Stephen Murray. 'We are promoting an alcohol-free event where they can celebrate without any trouble. It is a big enough space which means that they can all celebrate together.'
In light of incidents of underage drinking in previous years, Stephen and other residents decided to organise the event. He said that he thinks there is a lot of pressure on young people to drink.
'The pressure is on them to grow up and do adult things. They associate celebrating with drink,' he said. 'We are trying to encourage them to wait until they are a bit older before they drink.'
The event will take place from 8 p.m. and tickets are available at the door for €15.
