Change of heart on town site

A councillor said he is confident that a controversial parcel of land in the centre of Wexford town will not be sold into private ownership by the local authority.
The Council-owned site between Redmond Park and Parklands housing estate was placed on the open market recently by an auctioneering firm acting on behalf of Wexford County Council.
Cllr. George Lawlor and other councillors spoke out against the sale at a Borough District Council meeting in July and argued strongly that the site should be retained and used to build social housing, especially homes for the elderly.
This week, the Labour councillor said that since then he has had brief discussions with Council officials regarding the sale of the land and he is 'confident' that the local authority is amenable to keeping the site in public ownership for the construction of housing.
'My preference is for an enclave of convenient housing for the elderly beside a public park. It makes sense to develop the land ourselves when we have a housing crisis,' said Cllr. Lawlor.
