While many of us were still sun-seeking in July, the Castlebridge Gospel Choir were getting in the festive spirit as they put together their new Christmas charity CD.

The result of their efforts is their first ever CD, 'What Child is This', which is being sold in aid of the WSPCA and Down Syndrome Wexford. The 25-strong choir, band and percussionists recently launched the CD in Greenacres with great gusto, treating the crowd to a performance to give them a taste of what to expect.

'We were so overwhelmed and thrilled that such a huge crowd turned up, not only to support us, but to support two Wexford charities,' said Choir PRO and Secretary Jessica Donohoe-McDermott. 'As it was our first CD, we were quite apprehensive about it but the launch went like a dream. We wish to thank Alan Corcoran for launching it, along with everyone else who came to support us on the night.'

The Christmas CD, which was recorded in Orchard Recording Studios in Enniscorthy, features several Christmas classics including 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful', 'Joy to the World' and 'Oh Holy Night'. However, the choir chose to break away from the festive norms by putting their own spin on the CD.

'We wanted to give people a CD that they didn't already have,' explained Jessica. 'So while we do the norms like 'Jingle Bells', we also give a flavour of what our choir is about with some different songs.'

Along with songs such as 'Do You Hear What I Hear' and 'What Child is This', there are also three bonus tracks: 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'All That I Am' and the choir's 'anthem' 'Can't Help Falling in Love With You.'

'We have been singing that song for about 14 years as we do a lot of weddings. It has become somewhat of our anthem or theme song. We couldn't record a CD and not feature it,' explained Jessica.

Special guest on the CD was Kevin McDermott, who is widely known for his musical talent and at the age of 80, recently released his first album.

'We roped Kevin in!' laughed Jessica.

Since launch night, almost all of the 500 CDs have been sold out. However, Jessica said they are currently taking orders for more and encourage anyone who wishes to purchase them to contact them via Facebook or email castlebridgegospelchoir@hotmail.com and place their order.

The CDs cost €10 and all of the proceeds will go to the local charities. According to Jessica, the group thought long and hard about the chosen charities.

'There is a gentleman on the choir whose son has Down Syndrome so that is a cause that would be very close to our hearts. Some of the members are also very involved with the WSPCA and so, we are very aware of some of the issues they are facing,' she said. 'There are so many great charities out there but we wanted to focus on keeping the money locally.'
