THE Augustinian Church in New Ross is closing its doors indefinitely, shocked mass-goers were informed over the weekend.

The beautiful church in the High Hill area was opened in 1844 and the Augustinians have been a constant presence in New Ross since the early 1300s when St Augustine's Priory was established.

Fr John Hennebry, Provincial and former Good Counsel College principal, said: 'It's a huge decision for us as we feel we're very much at the heart of New Ross. Our plan is to cut down on our existing services from August and it will close at the end of the year.'

'It's due to our own falling numbers and an increase in the age profile. We're no longer in a position to maintain the services that we previously had.'
