A comprehensive policy to regulate mining in Wexford is needed according to Councillor Barbara Anne Murphy, who raised a motion calling on Wexford County Council to establish such a plan.
Cllr Murphy brought up the motion in light of attempts to extract lithium at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains. She said that if found, they plan to use opencast mining methods.
'It is one of the dirtiest forms of mining and can be detrimental to farming, the environment, the landscape, tourism and communities,' she said.
Cllr Deirdre Wadding seconded the motion.
