Colfer, Gardai, and drugs add up to successful comedy film

A FILM by Wexford movie-maker Eamonn Colfer was well received at the Fastnet Short Film Festival in Schull, County Cork.

' Know Your Enemy', about a zealous Garda who learns a life lesson when a drugs awareness demonstration gets out of hand, was shortlisted in the best comedy category.

The peaceful coastal village was overrun with filmmakers during the weekend festival which counts directors Jim Sheridan and David Puttnam among its patrons.

This year's comedy nominations were selected by Pat McCabe, author of The Butcher Boy, who picked 'Know Your Enemy' along with three other shorts from over 60 submissions in the comedy category.

McCabe said the Wexford entry didn't have the budget of the other nominations but he shortlisted it on the strength of its irreverence, authenticity and attention to craft.

The nine-minute film was shot on location at Wexford Garda Station and the CBS secondary school using local talent including John McNicholas, John Roche, Kyle Kemp and Ciara Spellman.

The film was photographed by Wexford cameraman Simon Doyle and sound recorded by Lisa Popplewell and will be posted online when it is finished on the festival circuit.
