Wexford County Council faces a legal challenge if it cannot refund disabled drivers who are forced to pay for parking in its car parks.

Cllr Davy Hynes sad under EU law drivers who park on disabled bays with a valid parking disc do not have to pay. He said that the car park at Paul Quay now had barriers who forced all people exiting to pay and asked the council look at ways where drivers with mobility issues could redeem their parking fee.

District manager Angela Laffan said that the council didn't have the resources to operate a refund system and pointed out there are a number of disabled parking bays in the immediate vicinity of the car park. She said it would be cost prohibitive to operate a refund system.

Cllr Deirdre Wadding said that 'someone might take a legal challenge' if they were entitled to free parking.
