Councillor wants Traveller awareness training
Traveller awareness training could be on the way to Wexford County Council.
Speaking at last Monday's meeting of Wexford County Council Cllr Deirdre Wadding laid down a notice of motion noting that 'this council welcomes the opportunity for cultural awareness training in preparation for the arrival of Syrian refugee families to Wexford. I call upon our council to similarly, in light of the official acknowledgement of Traveller Ethnicity undertake a programme of training in awareness of Traveller culture, issues and rights.'
Cllr Wadding said it was 'an ideal opportunity to develop awareness of the Traveller culture' adding she would like to see the members 'undertake awareness training. It would be a wonderful thing for us to do to challenge racism and prejudice'.
However Cllr Paddy Kavanagh was opposed to the motion saying 'I think we are all more than aware'.
Following a vote in the Council Chamber the motion was passed although some of the councillors voted against it agreeing with Cllr Kavanagh.
