A car with 'known criminal suspects' on board led gardaí on a high-speed chase along the Newtown Road and out to Taghmon.

A garda spokesman said the driver of the car failed to stop when requested on the Newtown Road shortly before 10 p.m. last Monday night.

The car sped off and was pursued by gardai in an unmarked patrol car.

A witness to the incident said the first she knew of it was when a 'car's headlights appeared right behind me' as she drove towards the Maldron Hotel.

'I got a real free fright, because one second there were no lights behind me and the next they were right there. The car then sped past me on to the wrong side of the road and almost hit the bollards in the centre as it did so,' she said.

Gardaí said the car was intercepted in Taghmon and the driver of the car will be facing prosecution for various road traffic offences.
