Dangerous conditions force taxis off the roads

Wednesday January 13 2010

ONE OF Wexford's biggest cab companies had to 'practically close up' because of the bitter weather conditions.

'We've effectively been closed since New Years Eve,' said owner Cathal Shannon last Friday. He added that the roads were too bad to risk carrying customers.

'It's just way too dangerous. We opened for a few hours on Friday, but that's about it. We've effectively been closed,' he said.

One of the cabs owned by Wexford Cabs was involved in a serious accident in Castlebridge on the day before New Years Eve.

'A cab skidded on black ice at about 8 a.m. It crashed into another car, and pushed that into another car. One of the vehicles was a write-off and the other was badly damaged,' he said.

'We decided to close. We just couldn't risk it. We didn't want to end up injuring someone, or writing off the vehicles. There would be no point waking up next week when the snow is gone and finding that half the fleet is annihilated,' he said.

Mr. Shannon was critical of Wexford County Council for poor gritting of roads. 'Some roads, like the road out to Castlebridge was treacherous. You'd wonder why bother paying car tax and rates when the Council don't do anything with the roads,' he said.
