A motion by councillor Davy Hynes calling on the local authority to call on the government to reverse the decision to introduce Pay-by-Weight bin charges by July was supported.

Cllr Hynes said that the charges could impose real financial hardship on poorer families with children, adding that the charge on recyclables was 'totally unproductive' and will lead to more dumping.

Chairman Cllr Tony Dempsey said the same motion was put forward by Cllr John Fleming last year, and passed. Cllr Hynes said the notion of paying for recyclables had only been introduced so his motion was relevant and different. 'This is on top of us now. The fact is that it's going to put huge hardship on people. There is no waiver scheme which has been a feature of this government.'

Cllr Deirdre Wadding seconded the motion. Cllr Hynes said people who are millionaires are treated the same as people who have no money by the government.
