Revenue officers seized a huge haul of approximately eight million cigarettes following the search of a number of premises in Wexford, believed to be centred around Enniscorthy, under warrant last week.

The cigarettes had arrived into Dublin Port from Vietnam via Rotterdam last Friday in a container which was consigned as 'Garden Furniture'.

The contraband cigarettes, branded 'Aroma,' have a retail value in excess of €4.2 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €3.3 million.

Revenue said the seizure, which took place last Monday (June 13) was 'intelligence-led'.

The seizure is part of Revenue's enforcement operations targeting the illegal importation, supply and sale of tobacco products and brings the total number of cigarettes seized so far this year to more than 36 million.

Investigations are continuing.
