Elderly man found dead at his home

Wednesday January 13 2010

A POST Mortem was carried out at the weekend on an elderly man found dead in arctic conditions at the rear of his house in Coolgreaney.

Harry Hunter, a widower in his midsixties of Knockgreaney, was found partially covered in snow at the back of the house. The post mortem was expected to shed light on why he was unable to get back inside to shelter from the freezing cold conditions.

Mr. Hunter had not been seen for several days, possibly a week or more, and neighbours became increasingly concerned when they went to his house and there was no answer at the door. They contacted Community Alert, and in turn, the Gardaí in Gorey were contacted. Gardaí were quickly out at the scene, and Mr. Hunter was discovered deceased in his back yard at 1.30 p.m.

Mr. Hunter, a father of one, worked at sea as a Bosun on ships for thirty to forty years, and came to live in the Coolgreaney area around twenty years ago.
