Employee tax is 'unjust'
THE universal social charge levied on PAYE employees has been branded by a Wexford councillor as the 'most unjust charge ever imposed on workers in this country.'
Cllr Paddy Nolan of Fianna Fáil told a meeting of Wexford Borough Council on Monday night that he strongly opposed the charge when his party introduced it in the Budget.
'I totally disagreed with the charge when my party brought it in,' said Cllr Nolan, adding that there was a public outcry about it at the time with the Labour Party among those who condemned it. He said he was 'astonished' at last week's Borough Council meeting to witness Labour Party councillors voting to retain the charge.
Cllr Nolan said he was denied the right to speak on the matter at that meeting but he was doing so now.
