AN Enniscorthy-based farmer topped the list of single farm payments for the period October 16 2013 to October 15, 2014, receiving €367,648.88, figures released on Saturday reveal.
Walter Furlong from Enniscorthy was one of 151 Wexford farmers to receive over €50,000 in CAP payments during this period.
The county received the fourth most nationally in single farm payments between October 16 2013 to October 15, 2014.
Wexford Local Development received €3,120,175 under the scheme, according to the figures. Wexford Pig Developments Ltd received €150,454, JFC Farms LTD from Enniscorthy received €141,551, while Stephen Hatton from the Enniscorthy municipal district received €139,025.
In the New Ross district William Shiely was the highest earner, receiving €125,608, while Michael Codd received €145,324 in Wexford and Tyol Ltd received the most in Gorey (€114,914). The publication of the names of the farmers who received the payments has been met with outrage in farming circles.
The figures were published on the Department of Agriculture's website on Saturday to comply with an EU regulation giving information on payments in EU-funded schemes. The database is searchable by name and county but it does not provide the recipient's full postal address.
The payments are made under the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) on condition that farmers look after the farm land and meet environmental, animal welfare and food safety standards.
