Brendan Etchingham said he was hugely relieved when his sister Joan called him from Kathmandu on Saturday to say she was safe and well.
'I had heard about the earthquake on the television and was very worried, but she rang me later that morning to say they had survived the quake and were grand,' said Brendan, who lives in Rosslare.
'She was a bit shook up, but to get the all-clear from her was great,' Brendan told this newspaper.
He said Joan, who is his older sister, was a very keen and experienced walker.
'She was with the Dublin City Ramblers and has done things like the Santiago de Compastella and goes out every weekend with that crowd (the Wexford party),' he said.
Joan, who is from Summerhill, works for FAS and has been active with Cornmarket Project as well.
