Farm theft on the rise in Wexford

IFA representative Anna Kehoe raised the issue of farm theft at the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting, saying that equipment and livestock theft seems to be on the rise.
Chief Superintendent John Roche said that there is evidence that 'pre-intelligence work' is carried out before machinery is taken from farms. He said that the Gardaí advise people not to entertain those who call to their door uninvited.
'They may be there to observe what is on the premises,' he said. 'They may not come back that night or week but they might return another time.'
Ms Kehoe queried whether footage from a farmyard CCTV camera could be used in court in cases of theft.
'It is very difficult to convict somebody through identification on CCTV,' said Supt Roche. 'It does act as a deterrent.'
