FF proposals on town councils an 'attack on local democracy'
A FIANNA FAIL proposal to abolish town councils, is an attack on local democracy, according to members of Wexford Borough Council.
Councillors agreed to support a motion from Killarney Town Council opposing the Fianna Fail submission to the Government White Paper on Local Government Reform.
'Under this proposal, 76 town councils would be abolished. I think this would be very detrimental to local democracy', said Cllr. Ted Howlin (Lab).
The Mayor, Cllr. Joe Ryan (Lab) said there was a campaign of opposition by the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland and he attended a meeting about the threat in New Ross recently.
' This is totally against local democracy. It is something we should fight very hard against. All Councils within the county should come together on it', said Cllr. Philomena Roche (FG).
Cllr. George Lawlor (Lab) said the HSE is an example of what happens when you dilute people power.
He called for the Council to support another motion from Clonmel Borough Council, demanding that the 'dysfunctional Health Service Executive' be disbanded.
